Welcome to Carter County!

Carter County offers fun, enjoyment and relaxation to our visitors. The area abounds in outdoors activities, white water rafting, hiking the Appalachian Trail, fishing (lake, rivers, and the trophy trout section), camping both tent and RV, picnicking by the lake or in the mountains, boating (rentals are available) or just a leisure and relaxing day touring and taking in the scenery in the beautiful highland regions of the county. Antique shops abound in the historic downtown and there are many unique restaurants for your dining pleasure.

Elizabethton

The town of Elizabethton is as unique as it's name and is a mixture of old and new. The Cruise-In every Saturday night from April through October takes you back to a time when muscle cars and rock-n-roll were all the rage. Elizabethton is surrounded by views of the mountains and has some of the best fishing spots in the nation. The people are so friendly it makes you think you have gone back in time. There is no shortage of churches, as Elizabethton has over 50 and you're bound to find the right one for you. For a small town, it has the necessary shopping conveniences and is only a short 15 minute drive to Johnson City. The Tri-Cities airport is convenient so you don't have to fly out of Nashville. There are several good restaurants and coffee lovers will enjoy the Coffee Company with gourmet food, delicious desserts and great tasting coffee. Once you come to visit, you will want to become a permanent resident.

Watauga Lake

Watauga Lake, claimed to be the third-cleanest lake in America, beckons water enthusiasts to Tennessee. You can enjoy a powerboat ride, fish, picnic or just spend a few relaxing hours by water's edge.

The Watauga Lake vicinity contrasts from highly-developed recreation facilities along TVA's 6,400-acre Watauga Lake to dispersed backcountry opportunities on White Rocks and Walnut mountains and in Pond Mountain Wilderness and Doe River Gorge Scenic Area.

Water-based recreation is abundant with Watauga Lake, seven waterfalls, Doe, Elk and Watauga rivers and several streams including Laurel Fork. Created in 1942 by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Watauga Lake is located a few miles east of Elizabethton.
